Monsoon Season and Your HVAC: What Dust Storms Leave Behind

Monsoon Season and Your HVAC: What Dust Storms Leave Behind

Arizona’s monsoon season runs from June 15 to September 30. It brings welcome rain, but also dust storms, wind and higher humidity. All three affect your heating and cooling system.

What dust storms do to your system

A large dust storm can push a thick wall of fine dust across a city in minutes. That dust coats the outdoor AC unit, clogs air filters faster, and finds its way into your home and ductwork. A dirty outdoor coil cannot release heat well, so your system has to work harder in the hottest part of the year.

Humidity and moisture

Monsoon season also raises humidity. Your air conditioner removes moisture from the air, and that water drains away through the condensate line. If the line is clogged, water can back up. Damp areas near the coil and drain pan are where mold is most likely to grow.

After-storm checklist

  • Check your air filter and replace it if it looks dusty.
  • Turn off power to the outdoor unit, then clear leaves and debris from around it.
  • Look at the outdoor coil. If it is coated with dirt, it is time for coil cleaning.
  • Make sure water is draining from the condensate line outside.
  • Watch for dust blowing from vents when the system starts.

When to call a professional

If your AC runs longer but the house still feels warm, you notice musty smells, or dust keeps coming out of the vents, it is a good time for a professional check. An HVAC inspection after monsoon season helps catch problems before next summer.
