Most homeowners never think about their air ducts. They sit behind walls and above ceilings, out of sight. But every bit of air your heating and cooling system moves passes through them. In Arizona, where the AC runs for much of the year, your ducts work harder than in most places.
The general rule: every 3 to 5 years
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every 3 to 5 years for most homes. That is a good starting point, but your home and habits matter just as much as the calendar.
Why Arizona homes may need it sooner
- Long cooling seasons. Your system may run for many hours a day from spring to fall, pulling in more dust.
- Dust storms. Monsoon dust storms push fine dust into homes through doors, windows and small gaps.
- Dry, dusty air. Desert dust is fine and light, so it settles easily inside ductwork.
- New building nearby. Construction dust travels, especially in growing neighborhoods.
Signs it may be time
- Dust puffs out of the vents when the system starts
- Vent covers get dusty again soon after you clean them
- Musty or stale smells when the air runs
- You cannot remember the last time the ducts were cleaned
When to clean sooner
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggests considering duct cleaning when there is substantial visible mold growth in ducts or system parts, when ducts have pests such as insects or rodents, or when ducts are clogged with dust and debris that blows out of the vents. Other good times to clean:
- After a remodel or renovation
- When you move into a home with an unknown history
- If you have several pets that shed
- After a water leak near the ductwork
What you can do between cleanings
- Check your air filter every month in summer and replace it when it looks dirty.
- Keep furniture and rugs from blocking vents and return grilles.
- Vacuum vent covers when you clean the room.
- Book an HVAC inspection if you are not sure what your system needs.
